The salt is extracted according to the principle of 'solution mining', see attached picture. A pipe leads to a depth of 1600 metres. Water passes through the pipe. The earth heats the water (it is 70 degrees Celsius there) and the magnesium salt dissolves. Via a second pipe, the liquid salt (brine) is pumped up. Most of it goes via an underground pipeline system from the mine to the NEDMAG factories in Veendam. Here, it is processed to make it suitable for various industrial purposes. For example, it is a basic material for making refractory ovens and it is processed as a fire-resistant material in clothing.
