Silver birch buds are great soil deacidifiers. As diuretics, they stimulate the excretory function of the kidneys. They also have the property of reducing the presence of unwanted substances in urine (albumin) and blood (urea), which may indicate kidney damage. They work in synergy with young heather shoots, whose main action is renal. Because of their content of arbutoside, a urinary antiseptic compound, they are mainly used in combination with cystitis treatments to prevent recurrence. They can also lower high creatine levels associated with impaired renal function. Alder buds have potent antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and are an important remedy for infectious diseases and acute inflammation.
